We had a mixed time in Costa Rica, both the highs and lows of travel.

We visited a rainforest where we travelled by boat through rivers fringed by stunning flora housing fascinating fauna.

We saw sloths, and monkeys and so many birds, crocodiles and green lizards that looked like leaves and can walk on water and snakes hidden in the trees.

We moved on to a charming little town at the base of a volcano where we were surrounded by hot springs. The volcano was dressed in cloud for most of our stay but the toucans and macaws came out to play.

And we drank cocktails in a swim up bar in a hot spring in the shadow of the volcano.

In a cloud forest we found stunning scenery and beautiful butterflies, pretty birds and a coati, which looks kind of like a raccoon. And more hummingbirds, so many hummingbirds.

We left for San Jose, the capital, a small city full of eclectic buildings and a grungy feel, where even the museum houses a butterfly sanctuary.

But our stay was soured when Ade’s wallet and phone were deftly taken from his camera bag while we took in the city streets.

We loved the wildlife and the clean and very green countryside in Costa Rica. It’s a very easy country to travel through.

In Costa Rica instead of saying ‘hello’ they say ‘pura vida’ – good life – and warm smiles will greet you wherever you go.

Just watch out for your wallet.

I'm looking through the bus windows, studying every branch we pass for signs of wildlife. I crane my neck trying to catch sight of a sloth, or a toucan or a monkey...
