Imagine camping out under the stars in Wadi Rum or eating like a local in Amman. In our latest You’ve Been Where? our guest writer Josh Nyhuis did just that. And while many people think Petra is a single building carved out of rock (the treasury building) Josh discovered there was so much more to see.
We’re pretty sure you’ll want to go to Jordan too after reading this post.
We love hearing about the travel experiences of our friends, family and readers of AllAbroad. We pick up so many tips and find new places to travel to. We thought you might like to hear about their adventures too. So in this section we turn the website over to you, our travel family.
Read on for travel tips from the people that help inspire our adventures.
Who are you and what do you do for a living?
My name is Joshua, I am Diane and Ade’s nephew and I am a FIFO mining worker.
Where is home? Melbourne, Australia.
Where have you been? When did you go?
I have been lucky enough to travel to many parts of Europe, but this trip in particular was to Jordan! I went in August, 2024.
Who did you travel with?
My friend Cody.
What were the highlights of your trip?
Jordan has been on my bucket list for a very long time. Particularly the ancient city of
Petra. However the highlight for me would have to be camping out in the Wadi Rum Desert. We had a Bedouin host, camped under the stars and experienced the desert at sunrise and sunset. No light pollution made the night sky an absolute masterpiece.
What did you least like about your trip?
I wouldn’t say I disliked it, but Jordan was definitely more expensive than I was anticipating.
Do you have any funny stories from your travels?
Not this trip in particular. It was pretty tame and more of a bucket list and cultural experience.
Our tour guides were trying to teach us some words of Arabic throughout the journey, I think they found it fairly funny how we were saying some of the words.
What were the locals like?
The locals were amazing! We came from Egypt, and in Egypt the locals are friendly but they are very in your face and pushy, especially in the tourist and market areas. When we were in Amman, the only time we got stopped or spoken to was people asking where we were from and welcoming us to Jordan.
What was the food like?
The food was sensational. When we arrived in Amman, Cody and I asked some locals and got recommended a Jordanian restaurant to try. We went there for lunch and ordered basically everything on the menu.
Everything was unbelievable!
Did you learn anything about yourself or the world on this trip?
I learn something new in all my world trips. This one was different than the rest though. Going through Ancient Egypt and Petra, and seeing a glimpse of how some of these ancient civilisations operated was really powerful, I have never really experienced anything like that before.
Petra is in a really remote location. We hiked 16km in the back way of Petra and saw all of the old buildings they literally carved into the cliff faces, and all the irrigation systems the Nabataean people were able to make in order to have water in the harsh climate.
I learned mainly that humans are incredible beings, that can overcome anything.
I really don’t think we give our ancient counterparts the credit they deserve about just how advanced they were.
Would you recommend others travel here? Why/Why not
Yes. Absolutely. The city of Petra and Wadi Rum should be on everybody’s bucket list.
I’ve never seen anything like it.
Do you have any tips for people thinking of travelling here?
SPEND AT LEAST TWO DAYS IN PETRA! Everybody who Googles Petra seems to have this idea that it is one building (the treasury) which is the most famous and most beautiful, but the actual city is massive, I believe it’s 200+ square kilometres big.
There are so many buildings and amazing things to see and it’s a shame that people only go there to see one building for their Instagram photos. Explore it!
